Raiders of the Lost Ark Cairo Swordsman

Raiders of the Lost Ark: Cairo Swordsman

Back in 1982 when Kenner launched its wonderful series of 3 ¾ inch action figures – Adventures of Indiana Jones in Raiders of the Lost Ark – they provided Indy with pretty much all the main villains from the film, allowing kids in bedrooms all over the world to re-enact their favourite scenes. One of those bad guys in particular has acquired almost legendary status, which is remarkable considering he is only actually seen on screen for a matter of seconds! (I’ll assume at this point that anybody reading this post has seen Raiders of the Lost Ark – if you haven’t, stop reading this paragraph – big spoiler alert coming up!)

Princess Leia Organa in Bespin Gown

Princess Leia Organa on Bespin – Star Wars most fashionable!

Almost all vintage Kenner Star Wars figures seem to have slight variations that set the hearts of adult collectors a flutter, but the 1980 Leia Organa is found with three major variations – crew neck, turtle neck or the rare gold neck. Identified as the “Bespin Gown” figure thanks to a spectacular decorated vinyl cape that does an excellent job of representing the cloak that Carrie Fisher wore on Bespin in The Empire Strikes Back, my crew neck version is possibly the easiest to track down, but being the most movie-accurate rendition, is definitely my favourite.

Kenner Super Powers Green Lantern from 1984

Kenner Super Powers: Green Lantern!

Recent years have seen a huge escalation in the release of superhero movies and 2011 will be no exception with yet more additions to both the X-Men and Transformers franchises, not to mention Kenneth Branagh’s Thor. The movie I’m most curious about, however, is Green Lantern, directed by Martin Campbell of Casino Royale fame. Ryan Reynolds will star as the DC Comics hero in the Hal Jordan version of Green Lantern and whilst the release of this blockbuster is slated for June 2011, the actor has already started appearing on the covers of film magazines – is 2011 going to be Green Lantern’s year?

Masters of the Universe 1984 Buzz-Off figure by Mattel

Buzz-Off – Heroic Spy in the Sky!

Ever since the news was first announced at the 2010 San Diego Comic Con earlier this year that Mattel would be issuing a Buzz-Off figure in December as part of its Masters of the Universe Classics toy line, the buzz (ahem!) about this figure got louder and louder! It became immediately clear from online forums that the humanoid bee from the race of Bee People was an immensely popular character from the original MOTU line, so with release of the new figure now imminent, let’s take a timely look back at the vintage version.

Masters of the Universe 1986 Tung Lashor figure by Mattel

Do I hear hissing? It must be Tung Lashor!

You’ve really got to hand it to Mattel, the creators of He-Man aka Masters of the Universe action figures, in their ability to come up with some of the greatest character names of any toy line ever! There was Moss Man (who was covered with moss – what else?!), the onomatopoeic names Buzz-Off and King Hiss, and of course, those wonderful made up words – Grizzlor, Skeletor and Roboto. This particular 5-inch MOTU action figure from Series 5 in 1986 is called Tung Lashor, probably one of the best of the worst linguistic puns of the series.

The Phantom of the Opera – Mini Monsters by Remco

The Phantom of the Opera – Mini Monsters by Remco

So here it is folks! The final post in our Halloween series for 2010 and one of my favourite horror film action figures and another Universal Monster movie classic – The Phantom of the Opera as played by Lon Chaney. Issued as part of the Mini Monsters line by Remco in 1980, this 3 ¾ inch action figure may be small, but it has one of the single best movie likenesses of all time. It features one of the earliest of the Universal Monsters – so early, in fact, that the 1925 version of The Phantom of the Opera, was a silent horror film. Chaney’s intentionally horrific, self-applied make-up, has been perfectly reproduced in this figure – a flattened nose, flared nostrils and jagged teeth in a mask-like deformed face. It’s an absolute gem of an action figure!

The Real Ghostbusters Fright Features: Peter Venkman

The Real Ghostbusters Fright Features: Peter Venkman

The countdown to Halloween continues! I simply couldn’t let October go by without including one of the Real Ghostbusters team and another action figure from one of my favourite Kenner lines from the late 1980s.

This 5-inch Peter Venkman action figure is from what was probably the most successful and popular sub-series from their Real Ghostbusters toy line – Fright Features. Far simpler than the Super Fright Features that followed, these figures were their first foray into innovative interactive expressions – each figure in the series is featured with one arm held slightly wide from their body and, if squeezed, the facial expression changes into one of alarm. Our Doctor Venkman here, for example, has clearly had a hair raising encounter with a ghost, his eyes pop out of their sockets and his jaw drops.
