Collecting Playmates Figures
Where to start with TMNT
The sheer volume of the TMNT line – hundreds of figures across decades of production – makes focus essential. The sensible starting point is the original 1988 wave: Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo, Raphael, Splinter, Shredder, Foot Soldier, and Bebop and Rocksteady. These are the figures that established the line and they remain the most collectible. From there, most collectors follow one of two paths – completing the early waves chronologically, or hunting specific characters they remember from childhood.
Soft head versus hard head
The most consequential variant distinction in TMNT collecting. The original four turtle figures were produced with a softer, more pliable plastic for the head before the mould was revised to a harder compound. Soft head figures are earlier, scarcer, and command significantly higher prices – particularly in carded condition. Identifying them requires handling the figure; the softness is immediately apparent compared to later production. On carded figures, soft head variants are not distinguishable from packaging alone, which creates both opportunity and risk when buying sealed.
Condition considerations
TMNT figures are durable but not indestructible. Accessories – weapons, belts, equipment – are small and frequently missing from loose figures. A complete Leonardo with all original weapons is harder to find than it appears. Paint wear on faces is common, particularly around the eyes and bandana. The cards themselves yellow and crease readily; high-grade carded examples are rarer than the secondary market volume implies.
Star Trek: The Next Generation
The Playmates Star Trek line is one of the most comprehensive licensed figure ranges the 1990s produced. The main TNG cast was covered in multiple versions across the run, joined by recurring characters, aliens, and crew variants that give the line real depth. Picard, Data, and Worf in original sealed packaging are the anchor pieces; rarer later-wave figures with shorter production runs represent the more challenging end of the line. The figures are highly detailed for their era and have aged well.
