Collecting vintage 8 inch Mego action figures from the World’s Greatest Super Heroes line can sometimes bring some fun surprises as we saw a while back with my Superman figure with Spider-man's red torso. Whilst many anomalies may well have left the factory that way during the long production life of these hugely popular figures, some toys have clearly been pieced together Frankenstein-style with spare parts from assorted characters or even reproduction accessories. I'm not entirely certain … [Read more...]
Web Climbing Spidey from Spider-Man 2
One of the action figure previews to generate a major buzz and lengthy blog posts all over the Internet during the recent San Diego Comic-Con was the all new Hasbro Spider-Man with sparkly metallic finishes. It will be released to coincide with the 2012 reboot of the Spider-Man movie franchise - The Amazing Spider-Man - which sees the very talented Andrew Garfield with the unenviable task of taking over a role that Tobey Maguire played so nerdily well in the Sam Raimi trilogy. In my book, … [Read more...]

Well, it looks like Hot Toys and Sideshow Collectibles have done it again folks...just when you thought their movie likenesses couldn't get any better, they have upped the ante once more with a brand new and highly collectible Captain America 12-inch action figure specially crafted on the image of Chris Evans as he appears in this summer's hotly anticipated Marvel Comics blockbuster Captain America: The First Avenger movie. Whether you specialise in vintage action figures or modern collectibles, … [Read more...]
Secret Wars: Spider-Man
Whilst Super Powers will probably remain my first choice as winners in the great superheroes action figure stand-off during the mid 1980s, when the mighty Mattel joined forces with Marvel to produce the Secret Wars line in direct competition with the DC Comics branded Kenner Super Powers product, I have to admit that I'm growing to like the Secret Wars figures more and more. Bright colours, solid sculpts and accurate comic-book costumes and likenesses made these figures popular at the time … [Read more...]
Secret Wars: Falcon
One of my favourite action figures from the vintage Mattel's Secret Wars 4 ½ inch series featuring superheroes from the Marvel Universe is, without a doubt, the Falcon. He may not have actually featured in Marvel's tie-in Secret Wars limited series of comics, but fans seem more than happy to overlook that detail when faced with an action figure that looks this good! The Falcon had, however, starred in his own 4 issue miniseries from November 1983 to February 1984, so maybe the powers that be … [Read more...]
Secret Wars: Captain America
2011 looks set to be another great year for superhero action movies – Thor, Green Lantern, yet more in the X-Men and Transformers sagas, and the hotly awaited Captain America: The First Avenger, starring Chris Evans (no stranger to Lycra after his turns as Johnny Storm in the Fantastic Four films) will all be hitting the big screen this year. Superhero flicks, of course, bring with them a slew of merchandising and a deafening kerching! as the tie-in products fly off shelves...or gather dust if … [Read more...]
The Lizard: Mego and the World’s Greatest Super Heroes…and Villains!
The World's Greatest Super Heroes was the line that made Mego's name, kicking off with the most famous characters from DC Comics and then moving into the Marvel Universe with a plethora of new heroes appearing from 1975 onwards such as Captain America, the Hulk and Spider-Man. A line of good guys only would have been no fun at all though, so a couple of villains were thrown in for good measure – The Green Goblin and The Lizard. When Mego's UK distributors Palitoy added Marvel characters to their … [Read more...]
