Kenner's legendary series of 3 ¾ inch action figures released as Adventures of Indiana Jones in Raiders of the Lost Ark in 1982 are high at the top of must-have items in many a vintage action figure collection. Less lovable, perhaps, but equally sought-after, are the figures in the short-lived 6 inch action figure line by LJN released in 1984 as a tie-in to Raiders prequel Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. The action figures that time forgot, however, are surely the 1987 Indiana Jones action … [Read more...]
Armored Daredevil by Toy Biz!
In 1993 Marvel Comics decided to revamp Daredevil's costume and kit out Matt Murdock in a snazzy new armored costume in the “Fall From Grace” storyline. This wasn't such a bad idea in theory – Daredevil may be the “Man Without Fear”, but surely a little protective gear isn't cheating – nobody thinks any less of Batman because he wears a Batsuit after all! Daredevil fans loved the old look, however, and by October 1995 he was pictured on the cover of issue #345 back in his red leotard and holding … [Read more...]
Colonial Warrior from Mattel’s Battlestar Galactica
Don't worry if this character isn't familiar to you. His face isn't likely to ring any bells with even the most die-hard fans of the original Battlestar Galactica TV series from 1978 either! When Glen A. Larson's short-lived sci-fi show was launched as a somewhat blatant attempt to rival the small screen success of Star Trek, and in the clear hope of cashing in on the cinematic box office success of Star Wars the previous year, Mattel won the license to produce the tie-in action figure … [Read more...]
X-Men Super-Villain Sauron with Savage Attack Wings!
When Marvel Comics launched a new super-villain in 1969 to do battle with the X-Men, writer Roy Thomas and artist Neal Adams found themselves with the tricky task of inventing a monster that would pass the strict rules of the Comics Code Authority, a 1950s body that still censored depictions of horror or violence in comics and even banned the use of centuries old legendary figures such as vampires and werewolves. Necessity, as they say, is the mother of invention, so Thomas and Adams brilliantly … [Read more...]
Leonardo – The Extreme Scooter Shreddin’ Turtle!
With the resounding success of the 2012 Olympics Games and the record-breaking attendance figures for the thrilling Paralympic Games which are currently taking place in London I thought a vintage sporting action figure was in order. Working on the premise that when it comes to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles MORE is quite definitely more, here is another figure in the accessory-packed Extreme Sports line from 2003. These 5 inch Playmates figures saw everybody's favourite reptiles decked out in … [Read more...]
Han Solo (in Trench Coat) tops best-dressed on planet Endor list for 1984!
When Kenner launched their first Han Solo 3 ¾ inch action figure way back in 1977 they made one of the very few errors in the company's history, creating a likeness of Harrison Ford with a disproportionately small head. Eager to correct their mistake, the ensuing re-sculpt saw them err on the generous size with the new Han sporting a oddly large bonce. This, of course, is all grist to the mill for collectors who just love tracking down varieties. Alongside the legendary small and big-headed … [Read more...]
Speed Surfing Silver Surfer by Toy Biz
Long before the name “Silver Surfer” was adopted as the Web's favourite nickname for elderly Internauts, this alien superhero graced the pages of Marvel Comics, first appearing in the Fantastic Four issue #48 in March 1966. Of course, the Silver Surfer never actually required anything as ordinary as waves in the ocean to surf, when with his cosmically powered flying surfboard-like spacecraft he could surf the universe faster than the speed of light! Before taking a brief blogging break in … [Read more...]
Skeletor – Evil lord of destruction!
It has been quite some time since we've looked at any of those swivel-hipped vintage wonders of the early 1980s – Mattel's Masters of the Universe. MOTU action figures swept toy aisles by storm thanks to a fiendishly well organised merchandising campaign which saw the tie-in animated TV series He-Man and the Masters of the Universe turn these 5 ½ -inch action figures into the most-wanted toy of an entire generation...until sales eventually slowed down after the arrival of Transformers and G.I. … [Read more...]
